Walking together for peace

The Route of Truce

The Route of Truce is inspired by the historical relationship between Ancient Olympia and the concept of the Olympic Truce. It seeks to transform the values of peace, friendship, and mutual respect into a shared cultural and sporting experience.

The route connects historical awareness with public participation, and reminds everyone who takes part that the Olympic tradition represents much more than athletic achievement.

01

The historical meaning of Truce

The ekecheiria guaranteed safe passage for those travelling to the Games. It was announced by heralds who set out from Elis, the city responsible for the sanctuary of Olympia.

02

The connection between Elis and Olympia

Elis organised the ancient Games, and athletes trained there before making their way to Olympia. The road between the two is the symbolic backbone of the Route of Truce.

03

The route's cultural significance

Walking or running a historical route turns history into experience. Participants don't just learn about the Truce — they take part in it.

04

Community, sport and education

  • Community participation open to people of all ages
  • Sporting activities — running and walking
  • Educational opportunities for schools and youth groups
  • Cultural events along the route
